Breaking through Barriers

Individuals with developmental or learning challenges were negatively impacted by COVID in many ways. Those whom were not able to attend day programs or had to discontinue employment may have experienced isolation.

Unicorn Children's Foundation focused on the opportunity to offer programs to individuals around the world, eliminating geographic barriers, expanding social networks, and exposing individuals with developmental or learning challenges to educational opportunities that they would not otherwise have available.

We are proud to serve communities across the US and beyond!

Through our virtual programming,
we are now able to serve individuals across the US.

Scratch Block-based Coding
Virtual class hosted via zoom

November 9 to December 14
Tuesdays (8 weeks)

7:00-8:00 PM EST
Unicorn Children's Foundation is excited to offer an introductory computer coding/programming class in partnership with Young Gates.  In this class we will be teaching Scratch right from Scratch. learning to run Scratch on your computer; understanding the Scratch interface; adding, deleting and changing characters; adding backdrops; performing simple movements; understanding the looks and the sounds of the sprites; understanding animations; understanding loops; understanding sensing and operators; and understanding variables.

The beauty of Scratch is that it is a wide open platform for creators to express themselves. You can create stories, games, art, animations, and more! The goal of this class is that each learner will end up with unique projects, and the tools needed to continue creating long after class is over!

Participants will run Scratch using an internet browser and share work either using screen share or displaying their work on an iPad through the camera on zoom.  Participants will be encouraged to create a Scratch account and save their work each week.
This class is intended for individuals ages 10 & older.

Read Testimonials
December 1 to December 15
Wednesdays (3 weeks)
10:00-11:00 AM EST
Unicorn Children's Foundation is partnering with Samia Creative to offer an informal and social gathering where we will use Photography to bond and make friends. There will be no homework and you will not need to submit your photos, although if you wish to, then it is welcomed! This class aims to reduce stress and anxiety as there are no expectations on the participants aside from practicing kindness towards each other.

What you can expect:
• To meet once a week with a Photography teacher and your peers to discuss or practice photography in a non-academic way
• For the class to be informal in structure, meaning one week we could be in the garden/patio taking photos and another week we may be discussing a famous photograph as a group
• Experimentation - we will also experiment further with class structure, such as going on a photowalk if participants are able to join class through a cellphone
• To practice photography as a therapy. The practice of photography has many therapeutic properties such as the ability to reduce stress, anxiety and low moods
• To bond as a group and create friendships with peers
• Self exploration - to bring sentimental photos to class and discuss life events and meaning through photography, while also receiving support from peers
• To build self esteem and confidence

Requirements:
These are things you will need in order to participate and join the club. Though good attendance is highly favored, this class is not linear, meaning it is okay to miss now and then if you are unable to make it as the rest of your experience will not be jeopardized.
• A device and internet connection to join class with (such as a laptop, computer, iPad or cell phone)
• A second device to take photos with (such as a cellphone with a camera, or a digital camera)
• The ability to use those devices fairly independently, or otherwise with a helper (who has tech skills) present

All ages welcome.

Cost: $20.00
Non-refundable fee
**The value of this class is $50.00 per session
but will be offered at a discounted rate, with support of available grants & donations.
