SAFETY ADJUSTMENTS
Personal Protection Equipment for Every Rider
● Every rider must bring (and wear) a facemask.
● It is recommended that each rider bring a bottle of personal hand sanitizer.
● Bike to the Beach will provide additional facemasks, hand sanitizer and disinfectant at each rest stop and gathering area.

Temperature Checks
● The start will have safety precautions similar to hospitals and doctors’ offices: required hand sanitizer use and facemasks, symptom questionnaire and infrared temperature scan.

Rolling/Timed or Scheduled Start
We are exploring numerous starting line crowd mitigation practices. Final selection will be made based on the number or participants registered to start at each location:
● Waves –2 different starting line times, reducing gathering size in half, quarters or more.
● Rolling – extended starting windows allowing participants can check in and launch without waiting for one official starting time.
● Scheduled –groups of 10-25 riders starting in 15 to 20-minute windows. Each location may have a different starting protocol. Specific protocols will be announced 10 days before ride-day.

No Bike Mechanics at the Start
There will NOT be mechanic support at the starting line. Bike support will be positioned at the 1st rest stop and on the route to assist with bike issues.

PREPARE YOUR BIKE: It is important that your bike is “ready-to-ride" when you start the event. Cyclists are encouraged to have their bike serviced before the event.

TRANSPORTATION

GETTING HOME FROM THE FINISH
Bus Transportation
We will offer transportation to take riders to each starting-line location. Transportation can be purchased at registration or added later. Masks will be required when riding in any transportation vehicle.

Safety Precautions
  • All windows will be fully open during the shuttle trip.
  • All participants will be required to wear a mask and sanitize their hands before boarding

BIKE PACKING AND PROTECTION
Bike to the Beach and our partners will do our best to protect bikes during transportation, commonly wrapping them in moving blankets and/or strapping them to prevent movement. Our team and volunteers are careful with your bike while loading it and during transportation. If you are concerned about it being scratched, please feel free to bring extra packing materials to protect or pack your own bike. Bike to the Beach is NOT responsible for any damage to your bike or bike
accessories incurred during transportation.

FUNDRAISING

Bike to the Beach participants are required to raise either the $500 minimum pledge OR earn 1,000 fundraising points through the fundraising portal (read policy here). This system allows riders who may not be able to reach the $500 minimum to support the ride and the cause in other ways, such as posting on social media, fundraising, and recruiting riders.

Fundraising the $500 will be much easier than you think. Here are a few reasons why:
  1.  More people than you know are touched by autism. You will get more “thank you’s” than you expect when you tell people you are fundraising for autism, and those people will help you hit your goal.
  2. It is easy if you break it down into steps:
    • The average rider that posts to social media raises over $270 through small donations from friends.
    • The average rider raises over $150 from close and extended family.
    • That means you only need to fundraise $80 in other ways. Ask for donations from coworkers, do a bake sale, email friends, make a donation to yourself, see if your company has corporate matching….
  3. The average ride raises almost $1,000 through simple steps
  4. Bike to the Beach provides content so you don’t have to be an expert. They will provide personal and cause based emails in the weeks leading up to the ride so you don’t have to be a professional fundraiser or autism expert to communicate your commitment. They will give you emails and posts to hit your goal.

WHATS INCLUDED IN YOUR REGISTRATION?

● Bike to the Beach Jersey
● A custom, reusable mask with a PM 2.5 activated carbon filter
● A personal bottle of hand sanitizer
● Bike to the Beach saddle bag (for return riders)
● A Milestone Pin - for fundraising and participation milestones

WAYS TO RIDE

Bike to the Beach offers three methods to bike to the beach: Solo (on a bike by yourself), Tandem (on a bike with another person), Relay (switching at the halfway point – 50-Mile Start Line), or Virtually (ride your distance anytime in a 7-day
period).

In a relay, one rider will bike the first leg and the other rider will drive to the half-way meeting point. At the half-way meeting point, the biker and driver will switch places: the biker will drive the vehicle and the driver will bike the remaining portion of the ride. Only one exchange is allowed, and participants must provide their own chase vehicles.

Our virtual challenge starts the week before our event and is comprised of seven (7) daily, trackable challenges designed to be fun, engaging, and supportive of our cause. Each challenge participant will receive points for the actions taken. If the
participant reaches 1,000 points, rides their goal distance (tracked by Strava) and raises $250, they will earn our custom Bike to the Beach jersey and finisher shirt.

SAFETY ADJUSTMENTS: OUR VIRTUAL & ADVOCACY CHALLENGE RIDE

If you are unable to ride outdoors this year OR feel uncomfortable doing so, this year, we are offering a virtual challenge in the final week of our campaign: ride your distance anytime in a seven (7) day period and complete seven (7) daily, trackable
challenges designed to be fun, engaging, and supportive of our cause.

ROUTE

Our Bike to the Beach route is designed to transform the way our riders see and enjoy the locations through which we bike. As a destination ride, our goal is to take you on a journey through the varying landscapes and sites of the region on the safest and bike-friendly route possible.

Our route is not a closed course, however we have chosen bike-safe roads and seek to provide police or volunteer support in difficult areas. Bike mechanics and chase cars traverse the entire route to provide additional support, and rest stops are placed approximately every 15 miles with refreshments, hydration, and medical aids.

The full details will be provided to you in our packet-materials before the ride.
